Which course is right for me or my organization?

If you know which class of healthcare entity according to the HIPAA rules, then please take the appropriate course tailored to your type of organization (e.g., covered entity, hybrid, or business associate).  If you are not sure which type of entity you work for, then the general HIPAA 101 course as an introduction would be perfectly suited to you.

I worked for a covered entity. I thought the HIPAA Rules state that I need to be trained in my policies and procedures?

You are correct.  HealthCIO can easily customize the training to your particular organization.  However, if your organization has not provided some general training on HIPAA, then HIPAA training is needed to allow the staff to be on equal footing before specific policy based training is provided.

I work for a hybrid entity.  I did not see training for hybrid entities?

Because hybrid entities are so very different, we recommend training specific to covered entities.

When do I need to train my whole workforce in HIPAA?

HIPAA privacy requires training for the whole workforce by April 2003.  Since this is generally not possible for most large organizations, a training plan is needed to make provision for training the whole workforce.  Training is recommended for any worker handling or dealing with patient or member information.  In addition, HIPAA requires security awareness training under the security rules effective April 2005.

Does my workforce include non-employees?

I need to track course attendance. What options do you provide?

We provide a report that can be downloaded into an Excel spreadsheet or other software (e.g., a database).  Each course attendee is prompted to enter their personal information at the end of the course to track course completion and attendance.

What if I have questions after the course is completed?

We provide an option (upon request) that allows all or selected attendees to email questions to the course instructor.  The response will generally be provided within 24 hours.  It is like having a HIPAA SME (subject matter expert) on staff.
